IRS Free File Closes October 15, 2026: What US CPA Firms Need to Know About Free File, Fillable Forms and Direct File
The IRS Free File window for 2025 returns closes Thursday, October 15, 2026 — the same day as the extension filing deadline. For US CPA firms, that date is less about DIY software and more about late-season clients who planned to use free tools, prospects who may need paid prep for the 2027 filing season, and a clear explanation of Free File versus Free File Fillable Forms versus Direct File. This note is practical guidance for firms, not a consumer how-to.
Per IRS IR-2026-101 (August 26, 2026) and The Money Overview (Daniel Harper, October 13, 2026), Free File remains available through October 15, 2026. Guided partner software is free only if 2025 adjusted gross income (AGI) is $89,000 or less. Above that, Free File Fillable Forms are the free federal option for filers who can prepare their own returns.
Free File, Fillable Forms and Direct File are not the same product
Clients blur these names; firms should not.
- IRS Free File (guided partner software). Private software partners offer interview-style prep and e-file for eligible filers. Per IR-2026-101 and The Money Overview, the 2025 AGI cap for guided Free File is $89,000. Partners may add age or state rules on top of the IRS AGI screen.
- Free File Fillable Forms. Blank IRS forms you complete yourself — no interview, no income limit, federal only. Per The Money Overview, they do not support amended returns or prior-year returns. They are not a substitute for a signed preparer when the return is complex.
- IRS Direct File. The IRS-built online tool, separate from Free File. Per Accounting Today (Michael Cohn, November 6, 2025), the IRS told participating states that Direct File will not be available in Filing Season 2026, and no future launch date was set. Do not tell clients to wait for Direct File for 2026 returns.
Free File is a public-private partnership with an AGI cap on the guided path; Direct File was an IRS product. Mixing them in client emails creates false expectations about what closes on October 15 and what is simply unavailable this season.
AGI is the Free File screen — not gross income
The Money Overview lesson line is worth repeating to staff: AGI is total income minus Schedule 1 adjustments such as IRA or HSA contributions, student-loan interest and deductible self-employment tax — Form 1040 line 11. Wages can exceed $89,000 while AGI sits under the Free File guided-software cap. Gross income is the wrong screen for eligibility conversations.
When a late-season client asks "Can I still use Free File?", ask for estimated 2025 AGI, not W-2 box 1 alone. Then check whether any partner age or state rule would still block guided software. If AGI is over $89,000, the free path — if any — is Fillable Forms, not guided Free File.
The same AGI idea shows up in volunteer prep. Per IRS IR-2026-118 (October 1, 2026), VITA and TCE volunteers filed about 2.9 million free returns in 2026, and AGI is the screen that decides who qualifies for that help. Free File, volunteer sites and paid preparers are three different lanes; AGI helps clients understand which lane they were in.
What October 15 means for extension clients
IR-2026-101 encourages extension filers to finish sooner rather than wait for the October 15 deadline, and it repeats a point every firm already knows but clients still miss: an extension gives more time to file, not more time to pay. Taxpayers who owe should pay what they can as soon as possible to limit penalties and interest. Free File closing on the same day as the extended Form 1040 deadline does not change that.
For firms finishing extended 2025 returns this week, treat Free File as a client-communication issue, not a software issue:
- Identify clients who said they would "just use Free File." If their AGI is over $89,000, or their return needs state returns, amended work or prior-year catch-up, guided Free File was never the right path.
- Do not point complex returns at Fillable Forms. Federal-only DIY forms with no interview are a poor fit for Schedules C/E, K-1s, foreign reporting or multi-state filing.
- Separate filing from payment. If tax remains unpaid from April, calendar collection talk separately from the Free File / e-file conversation. Our October 15, 2026 extension deadline checklist covers the other items due the same day.
Prospects for the 2027 filing season
After October 15, there is no Free File window left for 2025 returns under the sources above. Clients who relied on guided Free File or who used Direct File in a prior year may look for a preparer for the next season — especially if their income crossed the AGI cap, their state return was never free, or Direct File is simply not an option for 2026 returns.
That is a capacity and intake problem for CPA firms. Three operational moves help:
- Qualify early on AGI and return type. Ask for last year's AGI, state filing needs and whether the client ever used Free File or Direct File. Document the answer in the intake form.
- Set expectations in writing. Free File partners, Fillable Forms, VITA/TCE and paid prep have different eligibility rules. A short FAQ in your engagement packet reduces "I thought this was free" calls in March.
- Protect review standards. New DIY-to-paid conversions often arrive with incomplete books. Tie them to your document checklist and, where books are behind, a cleanup path — see the QuickBooks Online cleanup handoff checklist.
When those prospects also bring IRS letters from mismatched information returns, triage them as matching notices rather than field audits; our note on IRS audit rates and CP2000s covers that distinction.
A short script for client questions this week
- "Does Free File still work after October 15?" Per IR-2026-101 and The Money Overview, Free File for 2025 returns closes October 15, 2026. After that, plan on paid prep or another available path.
- "My wages are over $89,000 — am I out?" Check AGI (Form 1040 line 11), not gross wages. If AGI is still at or under $89,000, guided Free File may still apply subject to partner rules. If AGI is over, Fillable Forms are the free federal DIY option described above.
- "What about Direct File?" Per Accounting Today (November 2025), Direct File is not available for Filing Season 2026. Free File is the IRS-partnered free program still tied to the October 15 window for 2025 returns.
- "I extended — do I still have to pay?" Yes. Extension of time to file is not extension of time to pay.
Where outsourced support fits
Late October stacks extension filings, Free File cutoff questions and early 2027-season intake. Extra capacity for document gathering, bookkeeping catch-up and return drafts does not replace the signing preparer's judgment, but it can keep deadline work and new-client intake from colliding. Frequently asked questions
When does IRS Free File close for 2025 returns?
Per IRS IR-2026-101 (August 26, 2026) and The Money Overview (Daniel Harper, October 13, 2026), Free File for 2025 returns closes Thursday, October 15, 2026. Guided partner software is available only if 2025 AGI is $89,000 or less.
What is the difference between Free File, Free File Fillable Forms and Direct File?
Guided Free File is partner software with a 2025 AGI cap of $89,000. Free File Fillable Forms are DIY federal forms with no income limit, no amended or prior-year support. Direct File was the IRS-built tool; per Accounting Today (Michael Cohn, November 6, 2025), it is not available for Filing Season 2026.
Does an extension give more time to pay if a client used Free File?
No. Per IR-2026-101, an extension gives more time to file, not more time to pay. Late filing and late payment are separate penalties.
